August C. Schrader
July 13th 1867 - April 3rd 1950 (82)
Wife: Anna Banks/ Kester/ Schrader
August Schrader with wife Anna Banks/ Schrader (AKA Anna Kester from 1st marriage)
Anna had 3 Children from 1st marriage Arthur, Edward and Hazel
August C. Schrader is my Great-Grandfather on my Grandmothers side.
In a nutshell, Anna Banks first married a man Henry Kester and had three children, Arthur, Edward, and Hazel. She was widowed at a very young age. Her husband, Mr. Henry Kester must have died somewhere between the ages of 26 and 28 years old. She then apparently stayed single for a little while then married August C. Schrader, who, with Anna Banks, her maiden name, married and had Charles and Evelyn. Point being, Evelyn and Hazel share the same mother, but different fathers making them half sisters.
August had at least 1 sib named Emma. It was her house where their father Alexander died after his horse accident.

1870
1870 Census from June 7th. At the time much of Orchard Park was called East Hamburg.

Keep in mind this is Evelyn Schrader's Grand mother and Grand father- the young boy Gustaff is Evelyn's father who Americanized his name to "August" - the Schrader side of the family not the Fay side. As you can see, both Alexander and Sophia were born in Mecklenberg Germany, same as Sophia's parents.

The Bowe family are Sophia's mother and father living with them.

* the house number is given as 48 but no street number is given.

Son Gustaf 3 years old is August, Evelyn's father.

Also: Charles and Minnie Bowe are Sophia's parents Born in Mecklenburg, Germany. I have seen Sophia's name spelled different ways Bowe/ Boy/ Boye.

1915

In the 1900 census scene below Anna or here called Annie is 24 years old with the three children also listed as widowed.
She then later married August Schrader, our great grandfather. He married Anna Banks, and adopted the three children or at least they were all living with him on a census report listed as stepson's and stepdaughter. Another newspaper article calls, August C Schrader has been there foster parent. Probably after Anna's death as she died first of course
She is listed as head of house 24 years old and widowed. Three children born three children living.
Son Arthur age 8 born 1891 in 1891 Anna Kester would have been 15 years old
Son Edward age 6 born 1893
Daughter Hazel age 2 born 1898 (This Mr Kester had to be alive to have Hazel in 1898. Soooo if he married Anna at age 18 and born around 1872. Which makes his about 26 years old at Hazel's birth.
*** Anna is listed at "widowed" in the 1900 census. So he would have been 28. Therefore, Mr. Kester must have died between the ages of 26 and 28.
In 1905 census (5 years later) shows Anna as head of house with the three children still not married. Anna is now 32 years old. And the children are Arther 12, Edward 10 and Hazel 7 years old
1900 Census

Anna Banks. Anna was wife to Henry Kester and had three children together: Anthony, Edward and Hazel. Hazel was born 1898 according to her tombstone and Hazel married first husband William S. Gray then second husband who she is buried with next to Claude in Hamburg and that is Harvey Dube. I'm mentioning Hazel because there are many photographs of my grandmother, Evelyn, and her half sister Hazel. Apparently they were pretty close. I'm sure they lived in close proximity to each other too.
In the 1920 Census he (William) was 27 and Hazel was 22. BUT: in the 1925 Census William is 33 and Hazel is 26.
Hazel married William Gray Feb 16th 1916 in Buffalo, NY

1902 Buffalo City Directory Lists Anna as widowed and living at 11 Owahn Pl
3 years later she is living at 32 Owahn Pl. Maybe she moved in the August Schrader here?
1905 Buffalo City Directory
List Anna as Widowed and living at 32 Owahn Place.
HUSBAND WAS HENRY KESTER got it.....

1905

At this same address August and Anna announced in the newspaper, the birth of Evelyn in 1910. So they must have already had Charles 2 years earlier and married before that. Look for a marriage 1907/08 (Charlie was born April 7th 1909)
Mom looks to be about 14-ish here 1943?

1925 Census shows Hazel with 2 children Ruth and Donald. Donald (born 7-23-1923) Living at 99 "lower" Columbus Avenue in Buffalo

Question: who and when was this grave bought? 1926? Or in 1939 when Anna passed?

August Schrader is not that far away in Hillcrest

Harvey J. Dube married Hazel Kester/ Gray July 6th 1957

In due time, I should look up these 4 people to see if they are Anna Banks Kester Schrader's relatives

Not really relatives but great grandmas first marriage to William Kester then married August Schraeder. Anna Kester had hazel Kester who married William Gray becoming Hazel Gray. Then eventually, Hazel Dube who is buried next to Claude
They are all in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Hamburg not too far from August Schrader

Mother Martha L Kester 1853-1921
Jacob Kester 1852-1940
Fred Kester 1885-1911
Martha L 1854-1922
This last person, Martha L, wonder if it's the same person who has the flat stone, same name, Martha, L, and the date of birth and the date of death are one year later than the person on the big stone. Don't know if it was a correction or a different family member that just so happened to be born one year later and died one year later coincidence who knows

I'll have to ask what "deeds" mean. Sounds like he might have bought some land at 430 East Hopkins, right where we used to live in South Buffalo. It is now a parking lot.

1925 Census
This shows how crazy it can be trying to find somebody's name and date. Noticed that there are so many times he is called August Schrader, and on this one census he's called Joseph. Same chilsame area same everything just changed his name.

Must be the 1920 census since Evelyn is nine years old

1930 Census
August and family are living
at 138 Main Street. Hamburg, NY
Cousin Lois did tell me he was a home builder in Hamburg.

This house is right by the circle and the grade school.
As you can see from the census report, this would be the house that my great grandfather and mother lived in while they had uncle Charlie, who is Lois's father and my grandmother Evelyn. I believe Evelyn was only five years old when living here we have to do more research to find out how long she actually stayed here in Hamburg. There is an old school house over behind KeyBank area. If she did attend kindergarten that may have been the building she started in.

Lois Gern says the photo to the left is Evelyn and her boyfriend Karl Mac.
