John Lilley

Wife: Roxanna Bates b 15 October 1757 Ct. d 2 April 1838 Pa.
Married April 8th 1779
Prince Lilley son of John Lilley

Wife: Sarah Munger
Born 1787 Death 1860`

What I'm trying to establish on this page is who was the first either Fay family member or Lily family member to move into the Pennsylvania area. The strongest suggestion so far is for Prince Lily to have moved there as per the handwritten letter stating John Lilley Senior was moving there because he was old and needed the aid of his son which was not mentioned, but is assumed to be Prince Lilley. But here's the first conundrum Prince Lily is shown to still be living in Sandy Creek area of New York during the 1830 census. So when the letter says John Lilley was removing himself from New York to Pennsylvania to be with his son, the son must have literally beat him there by days or week here's a big question. One, why did Prince move to Cory Pennsylvania? Was he married to somebody that was from that area or did he know somebody that was there. How did the Fay family factor in. Did they just move because of John Lilley Senior and his age and f or did Joel Fay seniors wife hail from that area originally.

Jeff Lilley sent me this note about his family  - Thank you Jeff

Reading your notes re: the other "Prince Lilley"... He was, indeed, John's younger brother. He joined the Rev. War when he was 15, and died during the winter at Valley Forge at age 16. John is listed as being at Valley Forge as well, so he likely watched his younger brother die. He then named one of his own sons "Prince", presumably after his younger brother who died in the war.

The last two children of John and Rox Lilley were born in Vermont.

Two of John Lilley’s children were born in VT

Asenath 1793 and John Jr. in 1798

Asenath married a man named Ira H. Sturdevant

Note:

Later in Penn. My grandfather's sister Lucy Fay also married a men Sturdivant (Oril). What's the name like that? I wonder if they were related

Looks like John Lilley Junior was still in New York as he bore a child in 1830. We might be back to Prince Lily being the one he traveled to see in Pennsylvania although I believe Prince also was in the 1830 census in New York Doublecheck che.

Williamstown, New York is located similar to Sandy Creek, which is about 50 miles south of Watertown, New York but in the same vicinity that we've seen the Lilley and Fay family living- after John Fay Jr's death in the war of 1812/13

To recheck names and date of this John Lilley

John Lilley is living in Richland, NY in 1820.

is only a few miles from where John Fay with son Joel Fay and wife Luck Lilley are living. They were in otter Creek, Vermont, which is near Middleberry, then moved to Salmon River, New York. Perhaps John Lilley and his family were following John Fay and his daughter Lucy Lilley/ Fay from Connecticut to Vermont to New York? Remember John Fay died in Sackets Harbor, New York 1813 after John Fay Junior's death, reportedly John Lilley took his daughter and her son Joel Junior to Concord, Pennsylvania. Presumably the Lilley's might have had family there.

NEW: I later learned John Lilley had a son Prince Lily, who was already in Concord, Pennsylvania.

JAMES FAY*****  This could be Joel M Fay Sr.’s brother

In the same 1820 census you can see a Fay listed two pages over from the Lilley family. It's hard to make out the first name, but the first letter looks an awful lot like the J in the name Jacob up above.

I've done a census search 1830 Concord Pennsylvania, and could not find any Lilley or Fay family member in that area for that census. Since they're usually conducted during the summertime, I can only assume that the Fay and Lilley families moved into the area either fall of 1830 or spring of 1831.for

1830 census Sandy Creek Oswego County, New York

On page 23 John Lilley Junior is listed than another Lily PLINEAS the spelling looks like. Then on page 13 Prince Lily is still in New York. Then again on page 11 of the 1830 census Henry Lilly may be listed, but the spilling looks like LILLIS. Then on page 3 of the same senses, ERA Lily, but I did not see any Fay family members in this town of Sandy Creek. Let's see where the Fay family is listed 1830.

Screenshot 2026-07-28 at 10.33.04 AM.png

Something to keep my eye out for as there may have been the brother of John Lilley born 1756 died 1841 and there may have been another prince Lilley born 1762 died 1778. That must be another one because we know our prince Lily was alive during the census reports of 1830 and 1840 at least so the prince Lily born 1762 must've been a brother to John Lilley. No matter how you slice it the Prince Lily we see listed in the 1830 census has to be John's son because the brother had already passed

Hand written letter - John Lilley explains why his revolutionary war pension check will be picked up in Pennsylvania instead of New York State.

There was a bit of turmoil during his time in New York State as his daughter's husband was killed during the war of 1812/ 13 leaving a wife and two small children. Joel Fay Senior being about 10 years old. They stay in New York long enough for Lucy to remarry Elijah Smith. (marriage 1820) But that only lasted four or five years according to other handwritten letters. Then probably in the fall of 1830, John Lilley moves his family and his daughters to Concord Pennsylvania.

***  I say probably moved his family in the fall of 1830 because the summertime 1830 census shows the Lilley family along with the Fay's still living in New York. But the below letter is dated May 26, 1831, so he's already in Pennsylvania. More than likely, he did not make the journey during the winter time or the muddy spring. Fall seems to be the best time for a wagon trip.

1850 census from Concord, Pennsylvania show Prince Lily and wife Sarah. Probably living with children. Notice Elijah Smith. When you're older than Lucy, Lily, who is listed further down this census report as living with Joel Fay, her son at 68 years old.

Elijah Smith, the man who left Lucy Lilley after four or five years of marriage. Curious, did he leave Lucy Lilley, and go to Pennsylvania?
